Instructions

<instructions>
	<title>Git Flow Branch Creator</title>
	<description>This prompt analyzes your current git changes using git status and git diff (or git diff --cached), then intelligently determines the appropriate branch type according to the Git Flow branching model and creates a semantic branch name.</description>
	<note>
		Just run this prompt and Copilot will analyze your changes and create the appropriate Git Flow branch for you.
	</note>
</instructions>

Workflow

Follow these steps:

  1. Run git status to review the current repository state and changed files.
  2. Run git diff (for unstaged changes) or git diff --cached (for staged changes) to analyze the nature of changes.
  3. Analyze the changes using the Git Flow Branch Analysis Framework below.
  4. Determine the appropriate branch type based on the analysis.
  5. Generate a semantic branch name following Git Flow conventions.
  6. Create the branch and switch to it automatically.
  7. Provide a summary of the analysis and next steps.

Summary

A Git Flow branch creator skill that analyzes git status and diff output to intelligently determine the appropriate branch type (feature, release, or hotfix) and generates semantic branch names following the nvie Git Flow model. The skill executes git commands, performs local analysis of code changes, and creates and checks out the appropriate branch.

Detected Capabilities

shell execution (git commands)file analysis (git diff/status parsing)branch creation (git checkout -b)local state inspection

Overall skill content

Use Cases

  • Create feature branches for new functionality
  • Generate hotfix branches for production critical bugs
  • Prepare release branches with version bumps
  • Automate semantic branch naming in Git Flow workflows
  • Analyze code changes to classify branch type

Quality Notes

  • Well-structured XML-based framework with clear decision logic and analysis criteria
  • Comprehensive Git Flow reference documentation embedded for context
  • Excellent use of concrete examples showing analysis for different scenarios
  • Validation checklist covers pre-analysis, quality, and execution safety
  • Edge case handling is documented (mixed changes, no changes, existing branches, name conflicts)
  • Branch naming conventions are specific with clear examples for each type
  • Analysis process is systematic and repeatable with clear decision tree
  • Instructions are clear but could benefit from explicit error handling guidance
  • No mention of prerequisite repository state assumptions (e.g., git initialized, remote configured)
