Update MCP Server

Update an existing MCP server registration on a live LiteLLM proxy.

Setup

LITELLM_BASE_URL  — e.g. https://my-proxy.example.com
LITELLM_API_KEY   — proxy admin key

Ask the user

  1. server_id — if they don't have it, list first:
    curl -s "$BASE/v1/mcp/server" -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY"

  2. What to change — any combination of:
    • url
    • credentials (rotate the auth token)
    • description
    • allowed_tools (list of tool names to expose)

Run

curl -s -X PUT "$BASE/v1/mcp/server" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "server_id": "<server_id>",
    "url": "<new_url>",
    "credentials": "<new_token>"
  }'

Only include the fields being changed.

Output

Confirm the server was updated and show the updated fields.

Summary

This skill updates an existing MCP server registration on a live LiteLLM proxy by calling a PUT endpoint. It guides the agent to collect a server_id and desired changes (URL, credentials, description, tools), then submits them via curl with proper authorization headers.

Use Cases

  • Rotate auth credentials for an MCP server without re-registering
  • Update a server's URL when it moves to a new host
  • Change tool exposure settings on a live MCP server
  • Update server description and metadata in-place

Quality Notes

  • Clear, well-scoped purpose — updates a specific server on a single proxy
  • Setup section explicitly documents required environment variables
  • Example curl command shows correct usage with Authorization header
  • Good guidance on partial updates ('Only include the fields being changed')
  • No example output or confirmation format documented — 'show the updated fields' is vague
  • No error handling guidance — what if server_id is invalid or already in use?
  • Lacks instructions on how to confirm success (HTTP status codes, response parsing)
  • No validation steps — agent should check response before confirming to user
